Get To Know: SILYLA

For over the past five years, SILYLA has been crafting her sound through songwriting and production. The Canadian-born singer has since garnered support from the likes of Apple Music through her debut single ‘C’est La Vie’, racking up over 15,000 streams on Spotify. Three months after the release of ‘Holiday’, the song had already gained 30,000 streams, proving her ability to connect with a wide range of listeners.

SILYLA’s talent doesn’t begin and end with her being a singer/songwriter. The young artist channels her love for visual curation through the co-direction of all of her music videos, having filmed and directed the music video for the single ‘Holiday’ on her VHS camera. Over the past four years, she has continued to work behind the scenes with a range of up-and-coming talent by writing music for other artists.

Keen to expand her creative vision, SILYLA remains steadfast in her desire to grow as an artist and develop her sonic and visual world with each new release. Her most recent single, ‘Doing Too Much’ SILYLA combines her feminine vocals into a pop, RnB track that stands out within the current UK R&B scene.

Speaking on the genre of her music, SILYLA explains how she “wanted to create something more R&B facing to show people that side of my artistry, as it’s so ingrained in what I do. Often, people don’t get to hear it due to only so many songs being released compared to the variety of genres I write”.

On the subject matter of ‘Doing Too Much’, SILYLA expresses disdain at her partner’s desire to take the relationship to the next level, breaking down typical assumptions about male emotional unavailability:

“There’s often a stereotype of men being the ones who want something casual and the girls chasing after them. That’s not always the case! Women want to have fun, too, and they should be able to explore and live their lives just as much as men are accepted to do.”

Despite still being in the early days of her career, SILYLA is already proving herself as a unique artist within the currently over-saturated market. The combination of her smooth R&B vocals with genre-bending production stands her in good stead for a promising career in the industry.
