Fredwave Says Farewell On His 'GOODNIGHT June' EP

Multi-disciplined British singer, songwriter and producer, Fredwave, is an artist in the purest form and he demonstrates his musicality on the short but sweet GOODNIGHT June EP.

GOODNIGHT June is only Fredwave’s sophomore project and at first listens seems like an affectionate goodbye to youth in the summer and the exploration of the London experience through an atmospheric othering of sounds

It’s bright and fresh, immersive and pushes his own creative boundaries resulting in the Londoner having one of the most unique projects of the year as he follows up his debut project Failure.

Explosive drums introduce you to the opening track ‘Run (from the world)’, that ring off like gunshots. The beat has undertones of electronic probing synths as he murmurs softly about uncertainty and the need to escape

The production in the glitched-out offering ‘LA LA’ is exquisite. Dogs bark faintly in the faint distance due to the other electronic elements, but there is something so cathartic and unravelling as we tread in Fredwave’s mess.

He addresses dramatized relationships, commenting on narcissism and insecurity but the toxicity. The intensity of his tone is urgent but frankly honest as he gets caught up in retelling. You also feel the quiet moments as he breaks off and the instrumentation rifts off before he begins to spiral.

You hear the familiar voice of Jeshi on ‘Temple’, joined by Elijah Waters against the thumping bassline and electronic production. Each provides interpretation and an honest point of view as they look into mental health, feeling pressure, partying and women.

The up-tempo and jazz-influenced ‘Sleep’ is off-beat and freeing. Frewave finds the space to express his feelings and finally, breath as we near the end of the project. Smoothly, he sings with a relaxed soulful tone.

On the chilled-out ‘Mind’ he applies pitched-up sample vocal samples on a stripped-down beat to see us out of the project as he touches on all the problems he’s going through.

An open and imaginative world closes the year 2023, offering a slice of what’s to come from the distinctive artist
