0207 Def Jam: Universal UK announces launch of new label led by Alec and Alex Boateng

Universal Music have launched a new label, 0207 Def Jam, that will serve as the UK home base for Def Jam Recordings.

The first section of the label's name comes from the London telephone code, and works as a homage and “a nod to the music, culture and art the UK is famed for”.

Ghanaian-British twin brothers Alec Boateng and Alex Boateng, who between them have an abundance of music industry knowledge and experience are leading the project together as co-presidents.

Alex Boateng has spent the last 10 years at Universal, with his most recent role as president of Island Records’ first Urban Division – saw him spearheading campaigns for the likes of Drake, Tiwa Savage, Giggs and Ray BLK. Meanwhile Alec Boateng spent the past seven years at Warner Music, and was previously the co-head of A&R at Atlantic, overseeing the rise os artists such as Burna Boy and Stormzy.

Amy Tettey, Alex's former Island colleague, will be joining the team as managing director - after working across Island’s entire roster with stars such as Amy Winehouse, Drake and Dizzee Rascal. Jacqueline Eyewe, previously senior managing marketer at Atlantic, has been appointed marketing director, while Char Grant joins from BMG Music Publishing as 0207 Def Jam’s A&R director.

It comes after UMG announced the launch of Def Jam Africa in May, with the aim to sign and develop talent from across the continent.

Alex Boateng said: “Especially in these times, this is a real privilege. I’m proud our collective journey now includes partnering a legendary label with a style that only London and the UK can provide. Looking forward to watching and guiding where the music and art takes the journey next.”

Alec Boateng added: “Music, art and artists really, really matter. I’m super excited to play a leadership role in this brilliant new space we’re creating for amazing music and talent to live and evolve. A space which will support both our teams and our artists to be the best version of themselves.”

Jeff Harleston, interim Chairman and CEO of Def Jam Recordings, added: “It is a perfect fit having Alex and Alec at the helm of 0207 Def Jam. Their creativity, artist relationships, and connection with culture are all key elements that have made Def Jam such an important label for over 35 years. I have no doubt that Alex, Alec and their team will only make the label and the brand even stronger.”
