Megan Thee Stallion Speaks Up For Black Women

For The New York Times, Megan Thee Stallion has written a new op-ed piece, championing Black women, their plights and her own personal experience.

Although she does not mention him by name, Megan Thee Stallion draws on her experience with Tory Lanez to contextualise the issues Black women face through abuse and not often being believed. She reflects on her silence and how her speaking up only proved her own fears she had, "the way people have publicly questioned and debated whether I played a role in my own violent assault proves that my fears about discussing what happened were, unfortunately, warranted."

Thee Stallion then goes onto broaden the discussion by illustrating the wider experience of women and Black women. "From the moment we begin to navigate the intricacies of adolescence, we feel the weight of this threat, and the weight of contradictory expectations and misguided preconceptions." The film that accompanies the piece on her instagram further delves into this.

To end the piece, she touches on the importance of the presidential elections and her hope that "Kamala Harris’s candidacy for vice president will usher in an era where Black women in 2020 are no longer “making history” for achieving things that should have been accomplished decades ago."
