“Being a stylist is feeding off of someone else and working around them - being a designer is something more free flowing,” says Aleali May, the established creative who has carved out a path for herself in the fashion world. From Wiz Khalifa, 21 Savage, and Kendrick Lamar, May has a number of recognisable names under her belt as clients she has worked with and styled for. She's presented a number of collaborations with Air Jordan - making history as she was the first women to design a unisex trainer.
Born and raised in LA, California, May takes inspiration from her hometown : the distinctive sunsets and blue skies which come with living on the West Coast bleed into the visuals of this collection.
Her passion for designing initially developed in middle school, leading her to create her own branded clothing in high school, which is where she discovered the drive she needed to later pursue a career as a stylist.
In 2022, MAYDE worldwide, May’s own brand, was launched, mixing casual and luxury pieces, creating essentials for men and women. May continued to build her niche in the fashion world upon the launch of her brand, extending her personal casual style into the professional world.
“In a world of heavily branded items, sometimes I need bolder cuts with minimal branding” May says of her brand. She wants MAYDE to offer an “array of washer cotton pieces that are made to be lived in” It's this demand for classic peices that lead May to collaborate with Clark's.
When approaching the collaboration with Clark’s, May was drawn to its classic street style reputation, along with the blend of authenticity
and charm which feels so close to what she is used to. For as long as she can remember, May has seen Clark’s as a classic brand, and growing up in the 90s and 2000s - a turning pinnacle point for fashion, music and culture at large - everyone was on the lookout for staple items for their wardrobes.
The pastel palette that is seen across the Wallabee boots was born from from the soft sunsets and light waves that May is all too familiar with - but doesn’t take for granted.
Hosting a range of soft shades, from Pacific Blue, Terracotta, Sand, Sunshine and Coral, sweet nostalgia of a perfect day at the beach is what comes to mind when May thinks of this collection.
LA is a place where everyone is grinding, working and hustling to achieve their dreams. Campaigns like this are for people who want to broaden their horizons when it comes to style. And Aleali May is doing just that- broadening the horizons of fashion by developing a reputation for herself that will establish herself as a designer who's work will endure in the ever changing shoe industry.
