The Ordinary Turns Beauty Markups into a Surreal Grocery Store: “The Markup Marché.”

The beauty industry often highlights numerous trending topics, ranging from popular ingredients to the best skincare routines and looks. However, The Ordinary is challenging one of the industry's biggest misconceptions: the influence of pricing. Its new global pop-up, The Markup Marché, reveals the power of marketing, branding, and buzzwords that lead consumers to spend hundreds of pounds or dollars on individual products. In reality, these ingredients can often be found in our grocery stores.

You know those products that claim to be “All-Natural Magical Energy-Boosting Bars”? It’s pretty much a fancy way of selling a banana for $175. Or avocados sold as “Glow-Enhancing Vitality Orbs” at $305. It’s the same product, just a psychological marketing method that keeps us hooked!

The Markup Marché concept uses grocery-store analogies to emphasise that ingredient quality should determine value, rather than marketing tactics. The Ordinary does an amazing job of peeling back the layers of the beauty industry. They highlight how frequently the industry exaggerates facts to justify high price tags. It’s refreshing to see a brand that challenges those inflated perceptions and invites us to rethink what we really need for our skincare routines.

The immersive experience lands across six global cities, including London, Paris, and Toronto, marking the brand’s first simultaneous physical activation at this scale. Each aisle is packed with stats and cultural cues, such as consumers paying significantly more for “magic” claims or premium packaging, turning the space into both a critique and a commentary.

At its core, The Markup Marché serves as a culture-first intervention. It presents a minimalist, meme-ready environment that calls out the obsession with luxury aesthetics and the psychology behind our spending habits. It boldly asks, why should we accept such outrageous markups in beauty when we wouldn’t stand for it in our grocery aisles?

Interesting read—love how it blends everyday beauty with surreal settings. It also reminds me of eco-friendly e-bikes from e movement uk, which bring a fresh and natural way to experience cities and mountains.
