Shay Lia's Back With Brand New Single Takutá

Shay Lia finally graces our screens again after a 2-year hiatus with the new single 'Takutá'. This comes at a first since her 2021 single 'Irrational' featuring Adekunle Gold. But despite the silence from the French- Djiboutian musician, this new release is most definitely the first addition to the artist's reclamation back into the music world.

Takutá as Shay Lia describes it, is a proposition conceptualized by her personal reclamation. As we witness some of our favourite artists reviving pop music recently, it’s clear that this new era encourages more of us to embrace ourselves and stand out as the instrumentals, sounds, and dance references that many of us have grown up on are finally re-emerging.

Shay Lia plays a vital role in the revival, she calls her new single a “call to rejoice and celebrate your body, your sensuality, your melanin, and your freedom.” Not only that but the visuals that accompany the single draw reference to her widely infamous dance moves from Kaytranada’s 2011 Montreal Boiler Room Set (if you’re not familiar, Shay can be seen sporting the cream top), at the time the set had a room full of 20-something-year-old's living and enjoying the music freely. More than a decade on and now more than ever we should all be inspired to bring out the same moves to our most loved songs.

The joyfully expressive visuals also pay homage to the influence of Janet Jackson’s choreography and the impact she had on a young Shay as well as the subtle sounds of Dancehall, Vogue, and Afropop which might be a signal and first look at a much larger upcoming project from the artist.
