Swedish musician JÁNA (Johanna Andrén) introduces to us her first breakup anthem with this concoction of alternative pop and bedroom R&B, following her single 'Green', that featured Nigerian-American duo VanJess.
Complete with synths and co-produced by Little Dragon drummer Erik Bodin, JÁNA steps up once again with effortless vocals and sleek production, the song portrays a feeling of being lost, feeling like an outsider in the aftermath of an ended relationship. Drawing inspiration from musicians such as SZA, Steve Lacy, BADBADNOTGOOD and Frank Ocean, JÁNA says she's more vocal on her next EP when it comes to her anger and frustrations, but it's in a way liberation as she rarely expresses these emotions in real life.
Speaking on the new single, JÁNA said: "The lyrics and melodies came super quickly to me on 'Outsider'. It’s my first “breakup song”. I’m questioning this person, the relationship and myself after a breakup. I’m basically asking this person lots of questions in a “how could you” type of way. There's a sense of frustration, resentment and some sort of sad hope (referring to the second verse) in this song; addressing the feeling that you don’t belong without that person or maybe you lost who you were before ever meeting them."
Having been introduced onto the scene through the collaborations with Swedish band Little Dragon on her debut EP Flowerworks, their collaborative piece 'Wild Roses' was a beautiful track filled with lush guitars and minimal beats that proceeded to put JÁNA onto the map.
This track delves deeper into JÁNA's psyche, giving us a taste as to what will be coming for the EP, and allows us to take a dip into her colourful world with this fluid yet emotional track that hits close to home.
