Dré Six Telling the Story of the Streets with a Different Pen in "TrapBlues The EP".

TrapBlues The EP

When Dré Six’s name appeared in the WhatsApp group chat for New Wave, I knew I had to write about his new EP, ‘TrapBlues The EP’. This wasn’t just another release to cover—Dré is a friend of mine, a good friend. I first discovered his music when Krept shared a snippet of his COLORS SHOW last year, featuring ‘Guns & Roses’.

From that moment, it was clear that people would soon know his name, that his music would be at the top of playlists, spun on the radio, and soon enough you'd see his name on the festival billboards.

His early singles, “Rolling Loud” and “Parlé” featuring One Acen, set the stage perfectly when they were released in 2021. In 2022, he continued to demonstrate his talent with tracks like “Last Night In L.A.,” “Strips & Chips,” and “Misery.” COLORS, on their website, described him for his “eloquent songwriting and soothing tones.”

In 2023, he dropped a series of tracks like ‘Another Life’, ‘Priorities’, and ‘Countless Nights’.

This year, he also appeared on Ghost Killer’s track ‘You Say!’, one of my personal favourites. Followed up with ‘Boring.’ and ‘For The Low’. It’s been a consistent stream of releases for Dré to build up to the launch of his EP.

TrapBlues’ blends UK rap, drill, and trap with indie blues. Picture Dré on a festival stage with his guitar, millions of people in the crowd—that’s the kind of powerful impact his music delivers. It’s an innovative approach in a scene that's often taken over by a more conventional sound.

The EP offers a raw and honest look into Dré’s life, blending personal narratives with broader themes to paint a vivid

picture of his experiences. It includes a selection of tracks he has been refining over time, including “Light & Dark,” which was originally released in 2022 with over 1.5 million streams on Spotify to date.

Tracks like "Ain’t Legal" offer a glimpse into what it feels like to be pigeonholed as a “stereotype” while working towards more. With his lyrics, he speaks for many others who can relate to his story and narrative with hooks like —“If it was you, I wonder what you’d do / If it was you I wonder how you’d survive?”—

"Country Lanes" stands out as particularly personal. Dré calls it the most "honest song" on the EP, focusing on family history and self-reflection. “I feel like it’s the most honest song on there,” he says. “I haven’t spoken about the streets and road in this kinda way. I’m basically self-reflecting – it’s inherited from our family. It’s just a bit more honest.

He adds, “When I heard the chords it was heartfelt, this one’s not glamourising anything, I wanna paint this in a way where it doesn’t look so nice. I wanted it to be very real.”

Other tracks, such as "Foreign Cars" (which recently had a music video release), and "Blues From The Trap" continue exploring the themes introduced in "Ain’t Legal," addressing issues like trauma and isolation with direct guitar melodies and honest lyrics.

With about 110,000 monthly Spotify listeners, it's clear his music is reaching audiences everywhere, including Sydney, Australia. Could this hint at a potential tour?

“He made his own gap in the market and filled that!”

I came across that comment as I was scrolling through the comment section under one of his Youtube videos - the observation highlights how Dré has found his place in the crowded music scene. He's in his own lane with an ability to integrate these diverse genres while maintaining a distinct personal style.

When asked how he wants people to feel when they listen to ‘TrapBlues,’ he said, “No specific feeling, enjoy the music, appreciate the music, get to know me a bit more through my music.”

My final thoughts on ‘TrapBlues The EP ' - Dré lays it all bare, raw emotion and introspection, painting a clear picture of his journey and his world. This project isn’t just about making music; it’s about defining his place in it. Dré Six isn’t waiting for success to find him; he’s shaping it. It’s clear that Dré Six is on the brink of something significant.

I expect him to gain wider recognition as he continues to grow in the industry as an independent artist and then who knows...

You can catch Dré's next live show: Saturday 7th September supporting Hak Baker in London.
