Bar Kroketa Is Soho's Little Slice of San Sebastián, Homage to Basque Dining

Just a few steps away from the constant movement of Carnaby Street, Bar Kroketa offers something increasingly rare in central London: permission to slow down. Tucked around a quiet Soho corner, the intimate restaurant transports guests into the atmosphere of northern Spain through warm hospitality, thoughtful interiors and a menu dedicated to one of Spain's most beloved comfort foods. Some may simply describe it as somewhere to eat between shopping stops; it's a destination that reminds you how food can become a cultural experience in its own right.

The space immediately sets the tone. Natural light pours through the skylight onto marble tabletops, dark wooden furniture and shelves lined with Spanish wines, ceramics and dried botanicals. Family photographs stretch across the walls, adding personality and history to the room, while exposed timber floors and soft amber lighting create the warmth of a neighbourhood restaurant that has welcomed generations of regulars. Latin music drifts effortlessly through the venue, carrying everything from gentle guitars to lively rhythms that quietly shift the mood of the afternoon. Within minutes, Soho disappears.

The drinks mirror that same sense of escape. Our opening cocktail arrived in an elegant coupe glass, its golden hue topped with a delicate dusting of seasoning around the rim that delivered a savoury kick before revealing bright citrus notes underneath. Balanced, refreshing and quietly complex, it set the pace for the meal without overpowering it. Alongside a carefully curated selection of vermouths, Txakoli, Albariño, sidra and Spanish-inspired cocktails, every pour encourages guests to explore beyond the familiar.

Naturally, the croquetas remain the centrepiece. Golden and impossibly crisp on the outside, each bite gives way to a molten, silky filling that demonstrates exactly why Bar Kroketa has built its reputation around this single dish. Served with a rich aioli finished with fresh chilli, they strike the perfect balance between comfort and refinement. Every detail, from the delicate garnish to the flawless fry, reflects an understanding that simplicity only succeeds when every element is executed with precision.

The menu continues to celebrate bold Spanish flavours through beautifully composed small plates. One standout skewer arrived resting on a generous layer of creamy sauce and deep crimson chilli oil, finished with charred citrus and pickled peppers that cut through the richness perfectly. Smoky, savoury and layered with just enough heat, it demonstrated the kitchen's confidence in allowing exceptional ingredients to speak loudly without unnecessary complication. It's the type of dish that invites conversation before the next order inevitably follows.

London has no shortage of restaurants serving tapas, but Bar Kroketa has created something more distinctive. It captures the spirit of Basque bar culture while remaining entirely comfortable within Soho's creative landscape. Whether you're pausing during a day spent exploring the West End, meeting friends over cocktails, or searching for one of London's most understated food destinations, Bar Kroketa delivers a reminder that some of the city's best discoveries still exist just around the corner, waiting for those willing to wander a little further.
