'AJ Tracey' Album Review

AJ Tracey has been on the scene since for a hot minute, earning his credibility through various projects such as Buster Cannon, Secure the Bag! and Lil Tracey. The wait for the rappers debut-album has been highly anticipated, AJ dropped his self-titled album last week.

AJ Tracey has only proved versatility with this album, his sound in this album cannot be defined by something so specific. AJ’s confidence in his versatility shows throughout this album, the album artwork is him pictured with a goat which metaphorically only speaks for itself.

The album only has three features from Giggs, Jay Critch and Not3s. AJ and Gigg's came together on 'Nothing But Net', both complimenting the track in their own ways. Ultimately, this album is AJ Tracey proving a point that he shouldn’t be referred to just as a ‘Grime Artist’ as he stated in a past interview and he’s executed that perfectly.

One of the tracks off of the album 'Ladbroke Grove', produced by Conducta is heavily influenced with a nostalgic garage sound. The track features a sample from Jorja Smith’s 'Wandering Romance’, sitting on the track comfortably AJ delivers his bars, making your head bounce.

However, one of the most prominent tracks off of the album ‘Psych Out!’ which he released back in January is bursting with a US Hip-Hop/Trap feel and the visuals correspond with this also. ‘Doing It’ released last November, is somewhat of a sound we are familiar with with the rapper, lyrically he discusses his success and achievements so far with fame. Pairing up with Steel Banglez for ‘Wifey Riddim 3’, AJ Tracey boasts about his ‘playboy’ ways with various women. Whereas with ‘Country Star’ the shift in music changes completely with more of an acoustic set feel, a softer track but still bound to make your head bounce.

Overall, AJ has definitely proved he doesn’t fit within such a singular sound with his debut album. The West Londoners delivery on every track, each a different feel and genre has proved his ability to flex musically. The growth from his previous projects is outstanding and we can’t wait to see what is next for AJ Tracey.
