Album: Meek Mill - Championships

Updated: Jan 3

It’s safe to say Meek Mill has had his fair share of intense years, a rap battle with one of the biggest artists in the world…Drake. A sour breakup with Nicki Minaj and being sentenced to jail for violating his probation. Since returning from prison, Meek has dropped his first full-length 18 track album and he has a lot to say.

Returning to the game with the hunger, passion and drive that he first came with, Championships has a host of features within it including Drake, Ella Mai, Kodak Black, Jay-Z, 21 Savage and more. With running themes of black oppression, injustice and prison reform, Meek really displays a sense of self growth and maturity further explaining how it’s taken affect on him, his family and people similar to him.

Discussing his experience as a black man living in America and fighting a system thats designed for him to fail, the track ‘Whats Free?’ which features Jay-Z and Rick Ross highlights this issue more, using a sample from The Notorious B.I.G.’s ’Whats Beef?’ one of the standout samples from the album.

Collaborating with R&B songstress Ella Mai, bringing back an old school feel to the album with track ’24/7’. This track expresses a more romantic and versatile side to Meek, illustrating relationships and spending time together. 24/7 also includes a sample from Beyoncé - Me, Myself & I which compliments the track perfectly.

On the track ‘Trauma’, Meek opens up about how for people growing up in poorer black neighbourhoods trauma accumulates, tying in his own experiences ‘Uh, my mama used to pray that she’d see me in Yale / It’s fucked up she gotta see me in jail’.

Championships showcases his dedication to Philadelphia, fans, family and listeners. This album also shows the versatility that Meek carries with him, more up beat anthems to tracks full of vulnerability. Meek has done nothing but prove himself with this album.
